So you have to be defeated, then restart the checkpoint where you still have a chance, and THEN exit to the desktop.
Did I mention that if you want to exit from the desktop during missions (mostly out of frustration or boredom), the game either saves the actual progress, even if you about to loose the battle, or make you to completely abandon the mission and start over the whole thing? I mean, there is NO option to exit without save. The problem of course, that you can't bring them with you to boss fights, which makes them a lot harder than it should be. You can pick two of them in each mission, and you simply cannot loose, not even on hard difficulty. They have a powerful shotgun, ability to shot twice in a row, they have a predator/crysis cloak, and many great abilities. On the other hand, the 'scout'-class is way better than the rest combined. The main characters are more or less useless, and you have to chose them for finishing main missions. By the way, about overwatch: you can win most of the missions by simply barricading yourself and set up a killzone, and watch how the reptilians run into it one by one, then, you can hunt the rest who had more intelligence to not doing so. But there is really nothing else besides these. The only advantage of this game is the "better" graphics, better animations, and a somewhat more sophisticated overwatch system.
Seriously, the Phoenix Point is a 20 times more professional game with 50 times more content. This "content" totally can be considered as an unfinished game. After you finish each multiple times, you get a story mission, which is sometimes an overwhelmingly hard boss fight. UPDATE: so you have three types of basic missions: sabotage (destroy a canister), supply run, and rescue people, and these three missions are repeating over and over.
I keep playing it, so I might update my review, later. For comparison: X-Com 2 8/10, Phoenix Point 7/10, Fort Triumph 6/10. Don't buy those 10 point reviews, they are all scams. This would be not a problem if the missions had been not completely repetitive. The game also has an idiotic, mobile-like menu system, which is completely unintuitive.
The game also has an idiotic checkpoint system with no save option, which can make you to loose a hard-core, eight turn progress anytime. I recently finished Fort Triumph, which I enjoyed a lot more than this, despite that that game is definitely for the younger generations. Games should not be too realistic, but GAMES! Why do you think the people still playing with old-school games like Doom? Enemies are also completely mediocre and totally similar to each other, as if the similar color schemes weren't enough. Developers keep making the mistake over and over than their "realistic" graphic consist of shades of brown and gray, and here you are, you can't catch the enemy from isometric view on a 32'' monitor. It is a decent game, but absolutely mediocre, and adds literally nothing to the genre.
Moreover, it is way worse than Phoenix Point (you read it right). It is a decent game, but absolutely This is nothing really like X-Com.
